Employment
Augusta County’s economy is diverse with 30% of the jobs in manufacturing and strong representation in the governmental, service, and trade sectors. Agriculture is also an important part of the economy. According to statistics from January 1, 2000, there were close to 1700 farms covering more than 300,000 acres of land.
Employment centers in the area include several warehouse and factory facilities with major retailers such as Target Distribution Center with 1.6 million square feet of factory space, Hershey Chocolate factory, McKee Foods, and Hollister, Inc. It’s no surprise that because of key transportation access points due to its location near I-81 and I-64, Stuarts Draft is part of what is known as the “Warehouse capital of the U.S.” However, agriculture and industry live side by side in this area as you see cattle grazing near the industrial plants and warehouses.

Thing to Do
You could say this Virginia town is a special blend of country life. Rich in tradition and history while bringing some of the important modern conveniences and lifestyles for today.
You can cool off in the Olympic-sized pool located at Stuarts Draft park. Participate and enjoy the annual Sweet Dreams Festival each June. Enjoy area activities just as wine tasting at Marceline Vineyards, sipping at Bold Rock Hard Cider, hiking the Humpback Rocks, or traveling back in time at the Frontier Culture Museum.
Just 30 minutes from town you can explore the “Grottoes of the Shenandoah” also known as the Grand Caverns. In addition to be a cool place to visit in order to escape the heat (the caves’ average temperature throughout the year is 54 degrees), it’s a cool place to discover history since its accidental discovery in 1804. You can see the scrawled-out signatures of over 200 civil war soldiers from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line.
Nature lovers will rejoice in the fact that the Rockfish Gap Trailhead for the Appalachian Trail is nearby. The A.T. trail (as hiking aficionados call it) runs from Georgia to Maine. The stretch running through Shenandoah National Park is frequently given an enthusiastic 5-star rating.
Landmarks
Harper House is a privately owned historic landmark built circa 1888. The two-story brick home is constructed in Italianate style, which was popular in the 19th-century phase of Classical architecture. The home is surrounded by farmland and a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The home was originally built for John J. Harper, a farmer, and his wife Sarah and family. The home is still in the Harper family today and includes several historic outbuildings including a summer kitchen, meat house, mortise-and-tenon frame granary, and laundry.
Bare House and Mill Ruins are located on the banks of the South River. This two-story stone mill operated from 1795 to 1850. The only thing left of the mill is the limestone ruins showing evidence of an undershot wheel. The original home was destroyed by fire and a new home was constructed in the 1850’s in the Greek Revival and Italianate designs so popular in that time period.
