The community grew out of the Crimora Manganese Mine that operated from 1866 to 1958. Among the largest manganese mining operations of its time, the site is now the location of three manmade lakes that are 20 to 100 feet deep.
The mine was named by Captain William Donald, the mine’s operator, and the community took its name from the mine. The inspiration for the name of the mine was Miss Crimora Frances Withrow, a young lady who lived in the community.
In 2010, the United States Census listed the population of Crimora as 2,209. Among those living in the community, 82.3-percent of the population had earned at least a high school degree or higher, and 13.2-percent of the population had earned at least a Bachelor’s degree or higher. The median household income was $41,146, and the median per capita income was $22,047.

Shenandoah National Park

The museum offers model train layouts in a variety of scales. Club members volunteer at the museum and operate their own trains and trains that belong to the club on the various layouts. Grand Caverns, the oldest cave attraction in the U.S., opened for tourists in 1806. The walls of the cave boast the signatures of 200 Confederate and Union soldiers. The temperature in the cave stays at 54-degrees year-round. Enjoy a guided tour and learn about the cave formations.
For the adventurous, there is a special two-hour tour of the unlighted Fountain Cave using a rugged path from the 1800’s, or for even more exploration authenticity, you can crawl and climb through the cave. You will don helmets, knee pads, gloves, and headlights for this tour. Participants must be 12 or older and dress appropriately, including long sleeve shirts, long pants, and closed-toed shoes or boots. These tours are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
The park surrounding the Grand Caverns offers Miniature Golf, fishing, a picnic area, five reserveable shelters, a swimming pool, and fitness, hiking, and cycling trails.
