Churchville, Virginia began its existence in the 1800s. It is located in Augusta County in the north central part of the state of Virginia. It was a popular stop for stagecoaches that were traveling across the lands. The area was also the site of a historic battle during the Civil War. The community grew out of the Crimora Manganese Mine that operated from 1866 to 1958. Among the largest manganese mining operations of its time, the site is now the location of three manmade lakes that are 20 to 100 feet deep.
The mine was named by Captain William Donald, the mine’s operator, and the community took its name from the mine. The inspiration for the name of the mine was Miss Crimora Frances Withrow, a young lady who lived in the community.
In 2010, the United States Census listed the population of Crimora as 2,209. Among those living in the community, 82.3-percent of the population had earned at least a high school degree or higher, and 13.2-percent of the population had earned at least a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Shenandoah National Park
The Shenandoah National Park covers 200,000 acres and offers waterfalls, wetlands, wooded hollows, and rocky peaks, including Turk Mountain. It runs along the Blue Ridge Mountains and includes 128 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The park includes a total of 500 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding. The Augusta County Railroad Museum & Model Railroad Club
The museum offers model train layouts in a variety of scales. Club members volunteer at the museum and operate their own trains and trains that belong to the club on the various layouts. Displays include model train collectibles, railroad memorabilia, and art featuring pictures of locomotives and railroad scenes.

Grand Caverns, the oldest cave attraction in the U.S., opened for tourists in 1806. The walls of the cave boast the signatures of 200 Confederate and Union soldiers. The temperature in the cave stays at 54-degrees year-round. Enjoy a guided tour and learn about the cave formations.
For the adventurous, there is a special two-hour tour of the unlighted Fountain Cave using a rugged path from the 1800’s, or for even more exploration authenticity, you can crawl and climb through the cave. You will don helmets, knee pads, gloves, and headlights for this tour. Participants must be 12 or older and dress appropriately, including long sleeve shirts, long pants, and closed-toed shoes or boots. These tours are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
The park surrounding the Grand Caverns offers Miniature Golf, fishing, a picnic area, five reserveable shelters, a swimming pool, and fitness, hiking, and cycling trails.

Located in Augusta and Rockingham Counties in Virginia, the town was first discovered in 1890 and was known as the city of Shendun. By the 1900’s, the town was beginning to thrive in commerce with entities such as a woodworking plant, mill, bowling alley and real estate offices. The Bank of Grottoes was founded in 1908. Four years later, the town’s General Assembly agreed to switch the name from Shendun to its current name. The city is home to the oldest show cave in America. The town’s start dates back to 1736 when William Gooch, Commander in Chief of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia granted William Beverly, Richard Randolph, and John Robinson a tract of 118,491 acres called the Manor of Beverly. Thomas Stuart received a grant of 353 acres in 1749 and Robert Stuart ran a chopping mill, one of the first industries in the area. Harper House is a privately owned historic landmark built circa 1888. The two-story brick home is constructed in Italianate style, which was popular in the 19th-century phase of Classical architecture. The home is surrounded by farmland and a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The home was originally built for John J. Harper, a farmer, and his wife Sarah and family. The home is still in the Harper family today and includes several historic outbuildings including a summer kitchen, meat house, mortise-and-tenon frame granary, and laundry.
Bare House and Mill Ruins are located on the banks of the South River. This two-story stone mill operated from 1795 to 1850. The only thing left of the mill is the limestone ruins showing evidence of an undershot wheel. The original home was destroyed by fire and a new home was constructed in the 1850’s in the Greek Revival and Italianate designs so popular in that time period.
